Why you need this

The computer is where most attacks land.

Phishing links, poisoned downloads, and unpatched software are how small organizations get compromised. The fix is not complicated, but it has to be done every week, on every machine, by someone whose job it is.

01

Unpatched software is an open door

Attackers scan for computers running old versions of Windows, macOS, browsers, and common apps. Updates close those doors. On most small teams nobody checks that they actually get applied.

02

Built-in antivirus is not enough on its own

Windows Defender and macOS protections are a good start, but they can be disabled, fall behind, or raise an alert that nobody reads. Monitoring means a person actually looks.

03

One click can reach everyone

A fake login page or a malicious document on one laptop can lead to the whole team's accounts, files, and contacts. Blocking known bad sites removes a large share of those clicks before they land.

04

Funders and partners now ask

Grant applications, insurers, and partner organizations increasingly want to know what protects your computers. A monthly report gives you a clear, honest answer.

What is included

What we do on every covered computer.

Updates managed
We schedule, apply, and verify operating-system and application updates on Windows and Mac. Reboots are scheduled around your work, and we follow up on machines that fall behind.
Threat monitoring and response
A managed detection and response agent watches each computer for signs of compromise. A 24/7 security operations center run by our partner Huntress investigates serious activity, can isolate an infected machine, and sends us clear instructions for cleanup.
Malicious-website blocking
A protective DNS filter blocks known phishing, malware, and attacker-controlled domains before the page loads. It travels with the laptop, so it works at home, in the office, and on public Wi-Fi.
Coverage checks
We confirm every covered computer is still connected and protected. When a machine goes quiet, an agent stops reporting, or protection is turned off, we find out and follow up.
Incident coordination
If something real happens, we contact your named person, explain what occurred in plain language, and coordinate containment and cleanup with you and whoever handles your IT.
Monthly plain-language report
A short summary each month: how many computers are covered, what was updated, what was blocked or investigated, and anything that needs a decision from you. Written for directors and funders, not engineers.
The tools

Proven platforms, operated by us.

We use three established platforms that work on Windows and Mac, and we handle the setup, configuration, and daily operation.

NinjaOne
Keeps track of each covered computer, applies and verifies updates, and lets us deploy the other tools without visiting your office.
Huntress Managed EDR
Detects signs of compromise and backs it with a 24/7 security operations center that investigates and responds. Secure Origin is a Huntress partner.
DNSFilter
Blocks known malicious and phishing websites on every network the computer connects to.
How it works

From first call to steady protection.

01
Baseline Review
A 30-minute call. We count the computers, confirm Windows or Mac, note who owns them, and ask what protection exists today. You get a written scope, price, and a plain description of what the tools collect.
02
Setup
After you approve in writing, we install the tools on each covered computer, confirm each one is reporting, review the update backlog, and confirm the person we call if there is an incident.
03
Ongoing protection
Updates, monitoring, and blocking run continuously. We check coverage, follow up on machines that need attention, and coordinate response to anything real.
04
Monthly report
A short written summary each month, plus a quick call whenever you want one.

Supporting several newsrooms? Networks, fiscal sponsors, and funders can cover a cohort of small newsrooms under one agreement at a lower per-computer rate. See the sponsored program.

Privacy

What the tools can see, in plain terms.

The tools collect what is needed to protect a computer: the device name and user account name, installed software and update status, whether protection is running, security alerts and the process activity behind them, and the names of websites the computer tries to reach so malicious ones can be blocked. They are not designed to read documents, messages, or files, record the screen, or log keystrokes. During the Baseline Review we give you a written list of exactly what is collected, who can see it, and how long it is kept. Full detail is on How we work.

Questions

Short answers

Does it work on Macs?
Yes. Windows and Mac are both supported at the same price. We confirm the coverage for your specific machines during the Baseline Review.
Does it cover personal laptops?
It can, with the owner's written agreement. Many small newsrooms and nonprofits run on personally owned machines. We explain what the tools collect so each person can decide, and we remove everything cleanly when they leave.
Will this slow our computers down?
The agents are lightweight and run in the background. Updates are scheduled, and reboots are planned around your work rather than forced mid-day.
Who responds if something happens at 2 a.m.?
The Huntress security operations center runs 24/7 and can isolate a compromised machine immediately. Secure Origin follows up during business hours, contacts your named person, and coordinates cleanup. We state our response times in writing before you sign.
We already have an IT company. Does this conflict?
No. We handle the security layer and work alongside your IT provider. During setup we agree on who does what and who gets called for which kind of problem.
Can we cancel?
Yes. The service is month to month with 30 days' notice. We remove the tools from your computers and confirm removal in writing.
